In conversation with Desford Colliery Band
December 19, 2025
The sound of Christmas is set to ring through the Century Theatre this December as the Desford Colliery Band fill the auditorium with festive warmth, brass brilliance and local pride. Fresh from being crowned UK Champion Brass Band 2025, the celebrated ensemble will treat audiences to not one, but two performances this year, a matinee and an additional evening show added due to overwhelming demand.
A legacy rooted in coal and community
For many, Desford Colliery Band is more than just a local treasure. It’s a symbol of tradition, talent, and community spirit that stretches back decades. The band’s origins date to 1956, when a small group of musicians from the village of Ellistown found themselves short of instruments. Support came from the Coalfield Industrial Social Welfare Organisation (CISWO), on one condition: they would represent one of the region’s collieries.
They chose Desford, then the largest in the area, a decision that would shape their legacy. From those humble beginnings, the band rose to national fame. By the 1980s, Desford had become a dominant force, winning four national titles, including three in a row. Their success carried them far beyond the Midlands to America, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia, where they performed at international schools, teaching young musicians and sharing the joy of brass band music.
“It’s been an incredible journey,” says Peter Smith, a long-standing member of the band. “We’ve travelled all over the world, and we’ve had the privilege of training players who’ve gone on to perform with some of the major orchestras. It’s something we’re all very proud of.”
A different way to rehearse
While their achievements speak volumes, what truly sets Desford Colliery Band apart is their approach to rehearsing. Unlike most bands that practice twice a week all year round, Desford takes a more focused route.
“Many of our players are top-class musicians with busy lives,” Peter explains. “Instead of constant rehearsals, we come together intensively before major contests or concerts. It’s probably the only band in the country that works this way, but it’s made us stronger, not weaker.”
This unique method has proved incredibly successful, keeping the musicians fresh, motivated and performance-ready for every event, including their highly anticipated Christmas concerts.
Bringing the Christmas spirit to life
The upcoming performances at Century Theatre promise a blend of classical and contemporary carols, joyful medleys and solo performances that showcase the band’s incredible depth of talent.
“It’s a happy time,” Peter says with a smile. “The audience always enjoys it, and so do we. There’s something magical about hearing those traditional melodies played live, it really captures the Christmas spirit.”
Though the music remains timeless, Desford’s concerts continue to evolve. “Christmas music doesn’t change much, and that’s part of the charm,” Peter reflects. “But we always bring something fresh. The arrangements, the energy, the atmosphere, it’s all about making the audience feel that festive excitement.”
A sound that defines a region
For many locals, the annual Christmas concert has become a tradition in itself, a chance to reconnect with the community and celebrate the region’s rich musical heritage.
“Brass band music has a completely unique sound,” Peter says. “It’s part of our culture here. So many families in this area have some connection to the mining past, and that’s where this music began, it came from the people.”
The band’s performances are not only a feast for the ears but a reminder of the Midlands’ deep-rooted ties to its industrial past and the pride that still resonates today.
Keeping the music alive
Beyond their performances, Desford Colliery Band is a registered charity that relies on community support to continue its work. Audiences can contribute by attending concerts, becoming patrons, or offering donations that help fund travel, maintenance, and education.
“Running a brass band is expensive,” Peter explains. “But every bit of support helps us keep the music alive. Anyone can get involved, and in return, patrons receive complimentary tickets to our concerts. It’s our way of saying thank you.”
